Exterior paint contains flexible resins and UV blockers so it can move with wood that swells and shrinks through the year. Interior paint is formulated for scrubbing and low odour and has neither. Use interior paint outdoors in Michigan and it cracks and peels within a winter; use exterior paint indoors and you are living with its solvents.

Almost every paint failure on wood is a preparation failure. The order is clean, scrape back to sound material, sand to a key, repair and seal, prime — and only then two thin topcoats rather than one thick one, with the manufacturer's recoat window actually observed.

Wet the glass with soapy water or glass cleaner first, then take the paint off with a fresh single-edge blade held at about 45 degrees, pushing in one direction. The lubricant and the angle are what prevent scratches — dry-scraping and steel wool are what cause them.

Standard epoxy is not an outdoor product. It ambers, chalks and loses its gloss in one Michigan season of direct sun, because the resin itself is not UV-stable. What survives outside is epoxy used as a base with a polyaspartic or aliphatic urethane topcoat over it — and even then, freeze-thaw on a slab that holds moisture will lift it from underneath.

Replace a cracked tile from the middle outwards, never from the edge. Score the grout line all the way round first, drill or break the centre, then lever the pieces inwards — the neighbouring tiles crack when force pushes against their edges. A cracked tile is also a water route into the subfloor, which is the real reason to fix it.

Press it. Drywall that is firm and dry under a stain can be sealed with a stain-blocking primer and painted. Drywall that gives, crumbles or has gone brown through the paper has lost its gypsum core and has to be cut out — and a backsplash must never go on either one until it is sound.
